From Larry Goodman:

It wasn’t easy but Southern Fried Championship Wrestling goes into their next major event, Crossroad on September 23, with a full head of steam.

It wouldn’t be a Southern Fried show under the artistic direction of Todd Sexton without last minute changes to the key matches. The highly anticipated (at least by me) rematch between former SFCW Heavyweight Champions Mikael Judas and Tetchi Makuj never happened. Judas suffered an injury during a match Friday night in South Carolina. Dax Anthony, one half of SFCW’s hot new tag team wasn’t there either so the tag title match was kaput.

The angles were what really mattered and on that score, things could not have worked out much better. Three matches were set up for Crossroads with hearty endorsements from the SFCW fans. Owner Charles Anschutz revealed two other intriguing match ups.

There was a major silver lining to Judas’ injury given the match his replacement, Jacob Ashworth had with Makuji.

The tag title match was barely missed. The Rave Approved saga was just as well served by the six man tag inserted into that spot, which was a fun match in its own right.

Attendance at Nowell Rec Center was 160. As is often the case with SFCW crowds, they were quiet early but hot when it counted.

Joseph Brock III announced Judas was in an accident and denied JB Enterprises had anything to do with it. Therefore, his “Japanese Assassin” Makuji was issuing an opening challenge.

(1)”The Prodigy” Andrew Duckworth defeated Damien Bennett in 8:32. Duckworth insisted on being introduced as the greatest wrestler ever to come out of Gainesville. Hard to believe Duckworth has only one year in the business. He has the look and feel of an experienced pro. Crowd popped hard for returning hometown hero Bennett. It was all Bennett until Duckworth planted him on the ring frame with a back suplex. Duckworth focused the point of his attack on the back. The unidentified woman who debuted last month (known as Harley Kae at NCW) came to ringside to scout talent. Rally time was at hand. Bennett got a near fall with a spinebuster. Duckworth likewise with a springboard blockbuster. Bennett countered Duckworth’s double underhook DDT with a uranage and tried to end it with a frogsplash. Duckworth got his knees up and hit the double underhook DDT to pick up the win. A solid opener and strong debut for Duckworth.

The mystery woman looked interested in Duckworth, who was more than interested in the mystery woman.

(2) Crystal Rose defeated Jessica Leigh in 6:51. Rose claimed that she was the powerhouse and played mind games with Leigh on the test of strength. Rose cut off Leigh’s flurry of offense with an eye rake. It was cheap heel tactics on parade with Rose getting heat and Leigh kicking out at one on her early pin attempts. On the comeback trail, Leigh gave Rose a spinebuster slam and fired up. Rose tried to hit Leigh with her studded bracelet. Referee Slim took the bracelet away but Rose rolled Leigh up using the tights. Match was OK.  Such is the state of pro wrestling that Rose was allowed to wear a studded bracelet during the match. Leigh got over fairly well but didn’t really show what she can do.
Todd and Kelly Sexton were introduced to a warm welcome. Sexton said he had done his best as matchmaker over the past year. It was a thankless job. There was always some resistance for a new matchmaker coming in and in his case that resistance came in the form of Drew Blood. Blood had been poking him for months. Owner Charles Anschutz had asked him not to get physically involved as he watched Sal Rinauro suffer a dislocated shoulder, his trainee Brandon Bates have his ankle broken and Rick Michaels made into a bloody mess, all at the hands of Blood. Then Blood decided to kiss Kelly. Sexton said he had to ask himself if the job was worth it so he was stepping away from his position as of tonight.

Enter Brock and Makuji followed by Blood with a sarcastic thank you to sound guy Scottie Harvey for screwing up his music. Blood claimed he was there to give Sexton and his beautiful wife a proper farewell. Security formed a wall in the ring to keep Sexton at bay.

Blood had mementos of appreciation for Sexton - trunks worn by Jagged Edge (retired by JB Enterprises “career ender” Brian Kane), Todd’s wallet chain (the one Blood used to bust his mouth), a dental X-ray allegedly showing the retainer Todd needed to replace the teeth Blood knocked out, a job application for Bob’s Car Wash and…the panties Kelly left in the trunk of his car (“she didn’t wear them very long”). Sexton went berserk and got dragged out the side door by security. Blood blew a candle to signify the end of the Sexton era. Blood said the eclipse was fake news and what the world was going to see on Monday was the changing of the guard.

It appeared there were no takers for Makuji’s open challenge until Ashworth appeared to an astonishing pop for a guy that hasn’t been around of late. Ashworth said JB Enterprises had disrespected his friend Rick Michaels and Monroe was about to see why Southern Fried is Ashworth.

(3) Tetchi Makuji (with Drew Blood & Joseph Brock) defeated Jacob Ashworth via submission in 9:48. Atmosphere was bell-to-bell heat like no other match on the show. Ashworth matched power with Makuji, then sent him packing with a classic babyface offensive flurry. Simple stuff and the crowd was going nuts for it. Bulldog out of the corner by Ashworth and Makuji bailed again. Makuji got the upper hand and started to wear Ashworth down. Makuji with a cartwheel back elbow and a Claymore – a stunning burst of agility and athleticism from the 275 pounder. Ashworth put Makuji down for a pair of near falls and locked in an armbar submission. Blood distracted Ashworth and Makuji capitalized with the Tongan Death Grip. Things could not have worked out any better for SFCW under the circumstances. They got a really good match, a pushable babyface out of the blue and Judas for Crossroads without doing a non-finish or screw job here.

Postmatch -- Blood said they would allow Ashworth to walk out like a noble warrior unlike the others. Crowd was uber appreciative of Ashworth’s valiant effort.

Somewhere along the line, Anschutz announced Odinson vs. Judas for the heavyweight title, Rave Approved vs. Hooligans for the tag titles and Jimmy Rave vs. Gladiator Jeremiah in a 30 minute Ironman for Crossroads.

The second half opened with Jimmy Rave and Adrian Hawkins on different pages about the leadership of Rave Approved. Hawkins said they had made some additions to Approved while Rave was away. Rave said while the boss is away the kids will play, but they would be doing things his way now.

(4) Stryknyn defeated Jimmy Rave (with Bobby Moore & Adrian Hawkins) via DQ in 3:50. Rave was in shockingly better shape, having dropped 35 pounds over the last couple of months. Rave stalled and stalled some more. When Hawkins attacked Stryknyn outside the ring, referee David Weakley called for the bell. Rave was not happy with Hawkins.

Approved beat on Stryk until Dany Only and Johnny Nixx made the save. Stryk challenged Approved to a six man tag. Rave accepted much to the dismay of Hawkins and Moore.

(5) Rave Approved (Jimmy Rave & Bobby Moore & Adrian Hawkins) defeated Hate Junkies (Stryknyn & Dany Only) & Johnny Nixx in 14:41. The opening minute saw the babyfaces let Moore and Hawkins have it with a plethora of “parties” -- boots, back elbows, stomps…fun for the fans not so much for Rave Approved. Moore finally dragged Hawkins to the corner so he could tag himself in and Approved got heat on Nixx. A missed cannonball by Moore led to the hot tag. Only cleaned house with Approved bumping like mad for his offense. Rave tapped to Stryknyn’s armbar but was not the legal man. Nixx caught fire with a sequence of flying moves, capped off by a killer satellite DDT on Moore. Big moves ensued every which way. Only hit a top rope elbow drop on Hawkins for a very near fall but it was not their night. Approved prevailed with a triple whammy – discus elbow by Moore, release german suplex by Hawkins and Rave’s smallest package in pro wrestling. Good match. No damage done to the babyfaces despite the relatively clean loss because they were super competitive. Nixx’s aerial offense made a real impression on the crowd because it was the only flying of the night. I don’t recall even one dive during the entire show.

Ring announcer Rick Richards tried to find out what the mystery woman was up to. She checked her cell phone, patted his cheek and walked off without saying a word.

(6) Brian Kane (with Dr. Brock & Drew Blood) defeated Geter via count out at 14:55 to retain the Phase One Trophy. Man oh man is Geter over in Monroe. Easily the biggest entrance pop of the show. Charles led a “Geter’s gonna kill you” chant. Kane’s marvelous selling was the key to making this match work as well as it did. Geter murdered him early, busting out palm strikes to the jaw and a tomahawk chop. Blood got in Geter’s face to provide some desperately needed distraction. Kane wailed away on Geter but wasn’t making much headway as he was still majorly affected by the earlier assault. Geter connected with one shot. Down went Kane. Geter warned Blood that he would ring his neck if he interfered again. Kane raked the eye and tried a headbutt. Bad idea. Kane finally did some damage with a series of shotgun dropkicks. Geter powered out of Kane’s cover at one. A uranage left Kane in an extremely bad way. Geter killed Kane dead with an off the shoulder reverse piledriver (think Bam Bam Bigelow’s Greetings from Asbury Park). Kane rolled out to the floor. While Brock diverted the attention of referee Radar Martin, Blood hit the ring and lured Geter into chasing him towards the back. Makuji emerged from the dressing room and blinded Geter with the green mist. Kane made it back into the ring and Geter was counted out.

Geter called Makuj out for costing him the title. A massive pull apart ensued with wrestlers and security trying to separate the monsters. Geter broke free and slammed Makuji hard on the floor for the holy shit moment of the night.

Anschutz announced Geter vs. Makuji for Crossroads.

Cut to the ring – Unbeknownst to Blood, Sexton had been very well disguised as one of the security guards. Sexton pounded on Blood and laid him out with a superkick. Sexton said Blood didn’t let him finish earlier in the evening. He was stepping away but not before he booked himself against Blood for Crossroads. The war has just begun.
